Welcome to Postern (trypostern.com), operated by Postern. By using this site, you agree to the following terms. Read them before using the service.
1. What Postern is
Postern is a free informational self-assessment tool. It asks you questions about your company's cybersecurity practices and produces a roadmap of suggestions based on public security frameworks. That's it. It is not security software, it is not a service that detects or prevents attacks, and it is not a professional consulting engagement.
2. What Postern is not
Postern does not provide:
- Legal advice
- Compliance certification, audit, or attestation (SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA, PCI-DSS, GDPR, or any other framework)
- Professional cybersecurity services or consulting
- Endorsement of any third-party product, vendor, or service we name
- A guarantee that following our recommendations will prevent any particular incident or breach
Using Postern does not create any professional, advisory, attorney-client, or fiduciary relationship between you and us.
3. The information is provided as-is
We do our best to make the assessment accurate and the recommendations useful, but the cybersecurity landscape changes quickly. Information on the site may be incomplete, out of date, or wrong by the time you read it. We make no warranties of any kind, express, implied, or statutory, about the accuracy, completeness, reliability, or suitability of the assessment, the recommendations, or any other content on this site. Specifically, we disclaim all implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
4. Use at your own risk
You are solely responsible for any decisions you make based on this site, including but not limited to: choosing or rejecting any tool or vendor we mention; implementing, modifying, or skipping any security control; setting any configuration on any system; and complying with any law, regulation, or contractual obligation that applies to your company.
We strongly recommend consulting qualified legal counsel, compliance professionals, and cybersecurity practitioners before making decisions that materially affect your company's risk posture.
5. Third-party tools and links
We name specific products and vendors throughout the assessment. We have no commercial relationship with those vendors and receive no payment from them. We may be wrong about a vendor's current features, pricing, or security posture. We are not responsible for anything that happens after you click a link to a third-party site.
6. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages of any kind arising from your use of Postern, including without limitation:
- Any security incident, breach, or data loss at your company
- Any loss of business, revenue, profits, or goodwill
- Any reliance on the assessment, recommendations, or any other content on the site
- Any cost of substitute products or services
This applies even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages. Our total aggregate liability to you for any claim arising out of or relating to Postern is limited to fifty US dollars ($50).
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of certain warranties or damages. In those jurisdictions, our liability is limited to the maximum extent permitted by applicable law.
7. Indemnification
You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Postern, its operators, and its contributors from any claim or demand, including reasonable attorneys' fees, arising out of your use of the service, your violation of these terms, or your violation of any rights of a third party.
8. Your data
What we store, what we don't store, and how to delete your data is covered in our Privacy notice. By using Postern, you agree to that notice as well.
9. Changes to the service
We may change, suspend, or discontinue the service at any time without notice. We may change these terms; if we do, the "Last updated" date at the top will change. Continued use after a change constitutes acceptance.
10. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles. Any dispute will be resolved in the courts of Fairfax County, Virginia.
